Harold H. Hoffman, 80, of Vergas, died on Friday, November 2, 2007 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
Harold Herman Hoffman was born to Herman and Lena (Sandau) Hoffman on Dec. 6, 1926 in Vergas. He was baptized and later confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church of Vergas. He attended the Vergas public school until the eighth grade. Harold joined the United States Army in 1950, and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952.
Harold Hoffman On June 21, 1953, Harold married Violet Rosentreter. They resided in Vergas, where Harold worked at the Peterson & Harthun gas station. Later Harold and Violet purchased Long Lake Resort, and they operated the resort for 17 years. Harold delivered fuel oil to area families and farmers for 44 years. In 1970 he purchased Vergas Oil Company, along with Marvin Sandau and Kermit Schultz. The business was later sold, but Harold continued to work there until retiring in 1987. Violet died on Aug. 8, 1986. On Sept. 10, 1988, Harold married Angeline Hove Glawe.
Over the years, Harold was an active member of St. John?s Lutheran Church, also serving on the council. He was a volunteer fireman for 21 years. He was active in the Vergas Commercial Club and was a charter member of the Vergas Investment Club. Harold was also a member of VFW Post 7702 in Frazee, a member of the Western Harness Club, and Sons of Norway Vikingland Lodge 1-495. He served on the Candor Township board for several years and also was a representative for the Fergus Falls Monument Company.
Harold enjoyed gardening, fishing, deer hunting, card-playing, feeding birds and taking care of his yard. His radiant smile was most prevalent when spending time with his grandchildren.
Left to mourn Harold's passing are his wife, Angeline; son, Virgil (Gretchen); daughter, Vicki (Avery) Jones; five grandchildren; four stepchildren; eight step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren; one brother, Art (June) Hoffman; as well as a large extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Harold in death were his first wife, Violet; and his parents, Herman and Lena.
Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Vergas.
